Stryd 5.0 Running Power Meter Footpod – 15% Smaller, ANT+ & Bluetooth
The Stryd 5.0 is the latest generation of the running power meter that clips to your shoe and measures your effort in watts, in real time, on any terrain. Compared with the previous generation the pod is 15% smaller by volume, holds onto the shoe more securely, and produces a power number that stays steadier across changing gradients and speeds — which is the whole point of running with power.
What is actually new in the Stryd 5.0?
Three things matter. First, the power value itself is more consistent across grades and speeds, so a 250 W effort on a flat road and a 250 W effort up a hill really do feel like the same effort. Second, power responds faster on climbs and descents, so you settle into the correct effort sooner instead of overcooking the first thirty seconds of every hill. Third, upgraded sensing and refined algorithms have sharpened pace and distance accuracy as well as power.
Practically, that means better pacing on rolling and hilly courses — exactly the kind of racing where GPS pace is least useful.
Will it fit my racing shoes and spikes?
Yes. The 5.0 pod is 15% smaller by volume than the previous generation, and that reduction was made specifically so it sits cleanly on thin-soled race shoes and track spikes as well as on cushioned trainers. The clip-on action is unchanged, so moving Stryd between shoes still takes a few seconds.
The clip itself has been redesigned with a patterned double silicone anchoring surface, which grips noticeably better on shoes with unusual lacing patterns — a common complaint with earlier generations. The mount is aerospace-grade aluminium, and the enclosure is now 100% advanced fibre material rather than a partial shell, so it survives being kicked, scuffed and rained on.
How long does the battery last, and how do you charge it?
Around 20+ hours of continuous running, or roughly a month on a normal training schedule. Charging is done with the included two-sided magnetic keychain charger — it works either way up, so there is nothing to align. You can also double-tap the pod to see battery status instantly rather than opening the app.
Does it work with my watch?
Stryd broadcasts over both ANT+ and Bluetooth, so it pairs with Garmin, COROS, Suunto, Polar, Apple Watch and most other running watches as a footpod and power source. You do not need to buy a new watch to run with power. The 5.0 also has an extended antenna, which makes pairing and data sync more reliable in crowded race starts where dozens of devices are competing for the same airspace.
