TEMO POD·1000 Pack Steerable — 1.3 kW Rotating Electric Pod Drive
The POD·1000 in its rotating version is a through-hull electric drive for boats up to 9 metres in which the pod itself turns. Instead of relying on water flowing past a rudder, you vector 30 kg of static thrust — which means the boat still steers at zero speed. It runs the same 1,300 W brushless direct-drive motor as the fixed version, with the same Plug & Play remote throttle and 1-inch display.
When is a rotating pod worth the extra complexity?
Rudders only work when water is moving past them. In a tight marina, going astern, or on a boat with a small spade rudder set well aft, that is exactly when you have least steerage. A rotating pod solves it directly: turn the pod and the thrust points where you want to go, at any speed and in reverse. Owners of beamy cruisers, boats with twin rudders, motor launches without much rudder area, and anyone who berths stern-to in cross-wind will notice the difference every time they dock.
What are you giving up compared with the fixed pod?
Honestly: a rotating drive is mounted through a stern tube and has a steering linkage that the fixed version does not, so there is marginally more to inspect at haul-out. Both versions use the same aluminium housing and mechanical shaft seals, carry the same 1,500-hour service-free interval and the same warranty, and both are through-hull installations requiring a yard. If your boat already steers well under power at low speed, the fixed pod is the simpler machine and we will say so.
How do you size the battery bank?
Batteries are not included in this pack. The SEASIDE system runs on TEMO 48 V 2.3 kWh cassettes weighing 12 kg each that rack and parallel together, so capacity is built up to suit the boat and can be extended later. TEMO estimate about 2 hours 50 minutes at 1,100 W from one cassette. The architecture is semi-open and accepts approved partner batteries, and TEMO can supply the system battery-free for boats with an existing 48 V bank.
