How much extra running time does a second battery give?
It doubles it. The TEMO·1000 runs up to about 4 hours at cruising speed on one 949 Wh pack, so carrying a spare takes you to roughly 8 hours of cruising without going ashore. That is the difference between motoring out and back within one tide and having to plan around a 5 h 30 mains charge or a 12 h charge from the boat's 12 V supply.
Can you check the charge without fitting it to the motor?
Yes. The ON/OFF button on the pack both powers it and shows the charge level, so you can check a spare in a locker before leaving the dock rather than discovering it is flat when you need it. The pack also has a winterisation mode that protects cell life over long periods out of use — worth setting before laying up rather than after.
