The OUTPOD·3000 is the 6 HP-class member of TEMO's SEASIDE range: a 3,100 W brushless pod drive producing 67 kg of static thrust, mounted externally on the transom rather than through the hull. It is rated for sailboats up to 12 metres, and like the smaller OUTPOD it rides on a sliding mast with adjustable height, so the drive unit lifts clear of the water when you are sailing. For a cruising yacht that needs real auxiliary power without a diesel, this is the largest motor TEMO make that still installs without a shipyard.
Is 3.1 kW enough to replace a diesel auxiliary?
For a 12-metre displacement cruiser, 3,100 W of direct drive producing 67 kg of thrust is broadly comparable to a small diesel auxiliary, and considerably better in low-speed control and noise. Where it differs is endurance: a diesel gives you hours at a time from a tank you can top up anywhere, while an electric drive gives you the range your battery bank holds. Solar charging and hydrogeneration — both supported by the SEASIDE system — narrow that gap considerably on a boat that actually sails. Treat it as a genuine replacement for coastal cruising, harbour work and motoring out of anchorages, and a considered decision if you regularly motor for a full day.
Why choose the OUTPOD over a through-hull POD·3000?
No hull penetration, no haul-out to install, and the whole drive comes off for winter storage or a yard period. Sailing yachts also gain measurably from lifting the pod clear rather than dragging a fixed drive leg. The trade-off is that the unit is visible on the transom and adds weight aft. If the boat is new or already coming out of the water for other work, compare it against the fixed and rotating POD·3000 versions before deciding.
What comes in the pack?
The 3,100 W motor, the transom fitting, the remote throttle, a distribution box and a 1-inch monochrome display. The distribution box is what separates the 3000 packs from the 1000 packs — it handles the higher current the larger motor draws. Batteries are not included. The system runs on TEMO 48 V 2.3 kWh cassettes weighing 12 kg each that rack and parallel together, and the architecture is semi-open so approved partner batteries work too; TEMO can also supply it battery-free for boats with an existing 48 V bank. As a reference, TEMO's own 10 m dayboat configuration pairs a 3 kW fixed pod with two 2.3 kWh batteries. A 3.1 kW motor draws a bank down noticeably faster than the 1.3 kW units, so sizing matters more here — contact us before ordering and we will work through it with you.
