The POD·3000 in its rotating version is a 3,100 W through-hull electric drive for boats up to 12 metres in which the pod turns to steer the boat. It is mounted through a stern tube and attaches to the steering rod, so the existing helm vectors 67 kg of thrust rather than relying on a rudder. It is the most capable drive in the SEASIDE range and the one specified when close-quarters handling of a large cruiser matters as much as passage-making.
Why steer with the pod on a 12 metre boat?
The larger the boat, the more windage it carries and the harder it is to place in a berth on rudder authority alone — particularly astern, where most rudders do very little. A rotating pod points 3,100 W and 67 kg of thrust wherever you turn the helm, at any speed and in either direction. On a 12 metre cruiser in a cross-wind that is the difference between a controlled berthing and a scramble for fenders. It also removes the need for a bow thruster on many boats, which is worth weighing against the price.
What is the folding propeller option?
The 3000 range can be specified with a folding duckbill propeller in bronze instead of the standard 29 cm two-blade fibre-reinforced plastic unit. Under sail the blades fold in line with the shaft rather than standing square to the flow, which measurably reduces drag on a sailing yacht — the same reasoning that makes folding props standard on performance cruisers with diesel auxiliaries. What's included, and what still has to be specified?
The 3,100 W motor, the hull fitting, the remote throttle, a distribution box and a 1-inch monochrome display. Batteries are not included. The system runs on TEMO 48 V 2.3 kWh cassettes weighing 12 kg each that rack and parallel together; the architecture is semi-open to approved partner batteries, and TEMO can supply it battery-free for a boat with an existing 48 V bank. Solar charging and hydrogeneration are supported. On a boat this size the bank is a real design decision — the motor can draw 3.1 kW, so capacity, charging and where the weight sits all need working out. For scale, TEMO's reference 33 ft cruising catamaran configuration uses two 3 kW pods with two 2.3 kWh batteries. Contact us before ordering and we will go through it with you.
